What a fabulous week-end we had in the company of Kate Findlay! On Friday Kate entertained us with her talk about the different styles of her work over the last 15 years.
Starting with the Henley series – quilts made with Year 5 children based on Henley-on-Thames:
through the Hadron Collider series, using images from CERN to create stunning, large-scale quilts:
to her licensed work on a smaller scale for cards, kits, cushions and prints, based mainly on gardens, landscapes and wildlife:
Kate’s talk included fascinating short videos of her evolving processes, and many illustrations, plus the opportunity to purchase her kits, cards and books. It was a hugely entertaining evening.
Saturday gave us the opportunity to make our very own “wild garden” panel. Kate is so well organised (thanks to her previous profession of art teacher), providing the essential materials and beautiful pre-printed birds, and guiding us through the processes from stencilling the background, cutting out foliage for appliqué, that we were able to create near-finished pieces by the end of the workshop.
The day was packed, totally absorbing, very productive – and a lot of fun. All the techniques are beautifully straightforward and will hopefully lead to many more pieces being produced …
Just the finishing touches and framing to do at home …
