Talk – Identity and Intimacy with Julie Tristan

4 March 2022 @ 6:45 PM - 8:00 PM

In this presentation Julia talks about her own journey in textiles and her current investigation into the themes of identity and gender, deconstructivism and sustainability. She explains her choice and use of raw materials (second-hand clothing, old table linen, vintage lace, previously worn underwear) and illustrates how she transforms these into new artworks with changed identities. As text is increasingly becoming important in Julia’s artworks, examples will be discussed in the talk which link to the ‘Text in Textiles’ workshop that Julia will be teaching the following day.

Julia is a professional maker, educator and author in stitched textiles and contemporary art and design techniques. She is an active member of the Textile Study Group and teaches and exhibits her textile artworks internationally.

Julia has co-authored two popular Batsford books (‘How to be Creative in Textile Art’ and ‘Contemporary Appliqué), and has been teaching creative courses for more than thirty years, including at STITCHBUSINESS – an international stitch school she co-founded with Tracy A Franklin in 2006.

Julia has always had a passion for stitching and for creating artworks and installations from upcycled items. Many of her artworks have been documented and filmed, including her participation for Antony Gormley’s One and Other Project on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square.

Julia relocated from the UK to Denmark in 2019 where her own practice is now based. Her current practice investigates the themes of identity, gender, and sustainability.
