Summer School: 4th – 5th August, Story Samplers in Stitch with Annette Emms

In this workshop we will stitch a panel to illustrate some favourite words, a special occasion or maybe part of our own story.
The panel is made from a hand stitched, patched background on which many techniques are used to tell our story.
The panel could be a square, rectangle or even a circle, but Annette suggests keeping the size to no more than about 10 inches square. It could be a soft hanging panel or mounted in a frame. (“I have used all sorts of sticks to hang my work and box lids covered in paper as frames.”) Or perhaps a book cover.
There is a Requirements list in the Members’ Area. Alternatively, Annette is happy to supply kits for £3.00 each, to include the silk organza, background base fabric, tracing paper, graph paper, plain linen fabric and prepared fabric for drawing faces.
This two-day workshop will include all or some of the following techniques, at the choice of each student….
- A sketching session where students can draw or trace the elements they wish to include.
- Making the background approx 10 inch square or a similar sized rectangle.
- Painting on organza with watercolours.
- Drawing on calico with pencil crayons.
- Using a rubber stamp.
- Applique
- Lots of hand stitching.
Annette will provide lots of vintage fabrics, ideas and inspiration, as well as samples of her own work.
Annette has been teaching classes in Textile Art for more than 20 years. She says: “I just love stories, real and imaginary, and find inspiration in myths and legends, particularly those associated with historic/sacred/interesting places.
“I have often exhibited my work with the textile group, “Group Purple”.
“For some time I have been working in Book format, using mainly hand stitch and the many different ways that I have developed to get my ‘story’ onto the pages. I enjoy drawing and like to adapt my characters for use in my textile art.”
