Talk: Elizabeth Foster, A Life in Costume
2 June 2023 @ 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Elizabeth Foster is a talented stage costume maker and is also a member of Warwickshire Stitchers.
Her current position is at the Bear Pit in Stratford-upon-Avon, but she has made costumes around the world.
We will need to keep an eye out for a strange bird during her talk …
Elizabeth says about her life in costume: “I grew up in Trinidad & Tobago and participated in the country’s annual carnival competitions from childhood. This instilled a love of costumes and thinking laterally about fulfilling a design brief. “I came to the UK [Wales, my mother’s country] to study as a teacher in 1968, and immediately became involved in theatrical productions through college and at my first teaching job in Dartford Kent. I was introduced to a local non-professional company and have continued to design and make costumes for theatre productions since my first play, The Lion in Winter in 1972. “I hold City & Guilds Creative Textiles Parts 1&2 and have been a member of an Embroiderers Guild branch since 1980s, using their workshops to improve my skills and ideas. I have continued to develop my costume design & making skills over the years and particularly enjoy rising to the challenges of Director’s or script ‘s requests. “Since retiring from teaching, I have continued to work with several theatre groups on various productions each year. “I hope you enjoy the journey through some of the costumes I’ve made over the years.”
