Workshop: Bouquet: Adventures in Ribbon Embroidery with Susanna di Milo
8 October 2022 @ 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Delicate silk ribbons create the most realistic petals, leaves and stems with just a few basic embroidery stitches. In this workshop we will be creating an eternal boquet of silk flowers mounted on a small canvas.
The workshop will demonstrate skills and tips to make the most of these beautiful ribbons:

The workshop will consist of two parts: in the morning participants will be able to explore this delightful medium, working on a practice piece of fabric. There will be a range of silk ribbons of different widths and colours for you to practice with.
After lunch we will begin to work on the project itself. I will share tips to get a balanced composition and variety of flower designs so that you will have the confidence to create your own unique bouquet. |
During the workshop, I will be circling between small groups so that everyone can ask questions or see the technique up close.
At the end of the course, I will share resources to source these ribbons so that you can continue to explore the medium on your own.
About Susanna |
I have always loved creating with textiles, from my early years when I would knit complicated fair isle jumpers for my Sindy doll from my Nanna’s huge wool stash. I was given a tiny pink sewing machine as a Christmas present when I was 11 years old. I have always enjoyed dressmaking and home decoration.
In 2011 I was invited to create projects for Sewing World Magazine, and had a few projects published.
When I joined the Embroiderer’s Guild in 2018, my love of hand stitching began. Since then I have experimented with Textile Art alongside my dressmaking and hope to combine the two more often.
I also love needle-felting and the way you can create tactile art. These pieces evolved from just sitting and playing with textured floss and a pile of old tapestry wool. I love the way you can manipulate these threads and fibres lay onto the base layer to create movement. I hope to submit two canvases in the upcoming Compton Verney exhibition, so you will be able to see them at the workshop.
However, my curiosity leads me to use many media, acrylics, pencils and watercolour, but I am my happiest with a needle and thread.
I have found the Stitch Groups so inspiring and I discovered silk ribbon embroidery back in 2018 with a workshop hosted by Lorna Bateman. Since then I have experimented with this fast medium, creating little ATC bouquets to share.
I grew up long before social media, so I value my privacy (hence the stitched portrait). I use the name Fred the Needle for my Facebook profile – I’m always delighted to make new friends, so do feel free to connect with me.
